BACKGROUND NOTE



Founded in 1959 in response to the proliferation of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) during the Cold War, Omaha Action was initiated by the Committee for Nonviolent Action.  The group took its name from early protests at the ICBM base outside of Omaha, Nebraska.  The organization first began publishing their newsletter in Chicago, but they quickly moved their headquarters to Omaha by June of 1959.  Officers of Omaha Action included Chairman, Homer A. Jack, Treasurer, Lindley J. Burton, and Coordinators, Bradford Lyttle and Abraham J. Muste.



SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE



The collection consists of one folder containing information by and about Omaha Action.  The bulk of the collection consists of newsletters published by Omaha Action dating from 1959-1960.  Also included are flyers and informational brochures.  A newspaper clipping from 1982 and an issue of Nebraskans for Peace Nebraska Report from 1994 containing information about Omaha Action are also included.

History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
