BACKGROUND NOTE
The Stockmen’s Bank of Rushville, Nebraska, was organized as a state institution in 1898 by Horace C. Dale, H.A. Dawson, U.T. Johnson, and others. On May 29, 1908, it was converted to the national system and was renamed the Stockmen’s National Bank.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of one box of manuscript material including correspondence, 1920-1932; financial reports, 1929-1932; minutes of board meetings, 1930-1932; and miscellany.
This material relates to business conducted, policies created, and the financial status of the Stockmen’s National Bank of Rushville, Nebraska, during the Depression years, 1929-1932. A great deal of this material deals with the attempt of individual officers and board members to gain control of the bank and steps taken to defend against this takeover.
The correspondence, 1920-1932, primarily contains letters written by or to M.D. Cravath, president and board member of the Stockmen’s National Bank, while he was residing in California. These letters, written to Cravath by George P. Comer and Carson T. Smith, other board members, report on the bank’s status, the failure of other banks, the political situation, asset and liability figures, policies, board decisions, attempts to protect stockholders, attempts of others to gain control of the bank, business during the Depression, salaries, and financial problems faced by particular local companies or individuals.
The financial reports, 1929-1932, are statements of the financial condition of the Stockmen’s National Bank. Recordings of deposits, loans, cash, overdrafts, and profits are shown for various dates during this 4-year period. The minutes of the Stockmen’s National Bank Board of Directors, 1930-1932, include information on policies adopted, financial status, expenses, and loans. The miscellaneous materials include financial statements of other banks, newspaper clippings, and notes.
