BACKGROUND NOTE
Carrie Bell Raymond founded the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1904 after she visited a woman’s lecture circle in Washington, D.C. The constitution of the Circle, first written down in the 1920s, stated that the Circle’s purpose was to “afford a means of self-improvement for its members.” This was done through the presentations of visiting lecturers discussing a wide variety of subjects. Through the years, the Lecture Circle depended upon faculty members of the University of Nebraska to supply speakers. Originally, the group met in members’ homes. As membership expanded, the group meetings moved to the Cornhusker Hotel. Over the years, meetings were held at the Lincoln YWCA, Miller and Paine auditorium, Gere and Anderson branch libraries, Westminster Presbyterian Church and various other locations around the city. Their last meeting was held in 2014.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of the organizational records of the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle, including the constitution and by-laws, minutes of meetings, treasurer’s reports, annual programs and membership lists. Also included are various histories of the Circle, including their 90th Anniversary History (1994) and 100th Anniversary History (2004). The histories describe the Circle’s founding as well as its programs and activities through the years. They also provide information on speakers and their subjects of presentation, and listings of officers for the organization.
