BACKGROUND NOTE

Mrs. I.M. Raymond founded the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1904 after she visited a woman’s lecture circle in Washington, D.C. The constitution of the Circle, first written down in the 1920s, stated that the Circle’s purpose was to “afford a means of self-improvement for its members.” This was done through the presentations of visiting lecturers discussing a wide variety of subjects. Through the years, the Lecture Circle depended upon faculty members of the University of Nebraska to supply speakers.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of the organizational records of the Thursday Morning Lecture Circle, including the constitution and by-laws, minutes of meetings, treasurer’s reports, annual programs and membership lists. Also included is a typescript history of the Circle compiled by Clarice Keys Hicks in 1976. The history describes the Circle’s founding as well as its programs and activities through the years. It also provides information on speakers and their subjects of presentation, and listings of officers for the organization.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
