BACKGROUND NOTE
William Daily was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, July 24, 1828. He settled in Peru Precinct, Nebraska, in 1861. In 1863 he was appointed Indian Agent by President Lincoln. He was elected to represent Nemaha County in the Territorial Council in 1866, and in the first State Legislature, was elected to fill a vacancy in the State Senate. Mr. Daily was appointed United States Marshal for the District of Nebraska in 1871, and retained the position until 1880, when he declined a reappointment, and the same year was elected a member of the State Senate. William Daily died on April 11, 1926, at Peru, Nebraska.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of miscellaneous letters and receipts, 1865-1900, relating to William Daily’s career as an Indian agent, as well as his family and his financial, political and business affairs. One item refers to the incorporation of the Peru Hotel Company, Peru, Nebraska, in 1889. There is also letterhead from 1882 for “William Daily, Pure Short-Horn Cattle, Young Breeding Stock for Sale.”
