BACKGROUND NOTE

William H. Hoover was one of the first permanent settlers in Nemaha County.  Born in Miami County, Ohio in 1833, he moved with his parents when still a boy to northern Indiana and then later by team to Nebraska.  He first assisted in surveying a considerable area in the eastern part of the state and in January 1855, he took his first claim at Nemaha City.  Later he secured large additional tracts and was at one time the largest individual land owner in Nemaha County.

Mr. Hoover made a remarkable record as a public officer.  In 1855, upon the organization of the county, he was elected county clerk and register of deeds.  This office he held without break until 1867.  Before the expiration of this term as county clerk he was appointed, in 1864 clerk of the second judicial district.  This office he held until the 1880’s when he found it inconvenient to go on with the work an account of the removal of the county seat from Brownville to Auburn and declined re-election.  He served as voting registrar for Brownville precinct.  Besides giving exacting attention to his official duties, Mr. Hoover also ran a real estate and abstract business.  In 1867 he married Miss Hallie Favorite at Brownville and he had three daughters whose names were Marie, Helen and Alice.  He also had two brothers, J.P. and J.B. Hoover who also lived in Nemaha County.  In the fall of 1891 he became a member of the already large Brownville Colony in Lincoln, where he lived for seven years until his death at the age of 65, on June 10, 1898.  Mr. Hoover was a citizen of Nebraska for nearly forty-five years.  He was buried in the Brownville cemetery.

About History Nebraska
History Nebraska was founded in 1878 as the Nebraska State Historical Society by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed History Nebraska from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director and CEO Jill Dolberg. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for History Nebraska.
