SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection contains a letter and reminiscences of William Monroe McCanles, son of David McCanles who was killed by “Wild Bill” Hickok at Rock Creek Station in 1861. The account does not cover that episode, but deals with Indian raids (especially in 1864), freighting, wagon trains, buffalo hunting, etc. Evidently, McCanles had been asked to provide his recollections by John G. Ellenbecker of Marysville, Kansas, who was writing an account of the 1864 Indian raids in Nebraska. It was published as “Indian Raids on the Upper Little Blue in Southern Nebraska During the Sixties” (1937).
