Nebraska Civil War Veterans Database

The Nebraska Civil War Veterans Database has been compiled to locate name references within the Civil War Veterans Indexes for Union soldiers only.

This database is INCOMPLETE. More complete information for the veteran may be found in the “Index to Civil War Veterans from Nebraska,” which is a microfilm alphabetical index of approximately 45,000 Nebraska Civil War veterans.

The GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was a fraternal, charitable, and community organization. Researchers who wish to obtain copies of either the GAR roster entry or a GAR burial card, for those veterans buried in Nebraska, should contact the Reference Department.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
