Celebrating Black History Month: Virtual Education Program

Celebrating Black History Month: Virtual Education Program

Celebrate Black History Month with a virtual journey through the stories, artifacts, and remarkable contributions of African Americans in Nebraska.

On Monday, February 10th, at 10:30 AM (CST), the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Great Plains Black History Museum present a free virtual education program commemorating Black History Month!

Designed for 4th grade students and homeschool families, we’ll explore the contributions and experiences of Black Nebraskans throughout history, featuring a panel of expert speakers.
Join us as we examine fascinating artifacts from the NSHS Collection, introduce archeological digs relating to Black History, and share inspiring stories.

Speakers include:

  • Eric Ewing, Executive Director of the Great Plains Black History Museum, will share the creation of Black History Month and its importance today.
  • John Bell, a reenactor from Buffalo Soldiers of the American West, will present Buffalo Soldier uniforms and military gear.
  • Jordan Miller, NSHS 3-D Objects Curator, to showcase historical artifacts from the NSHS collection.
  • State Archeologist Dave Williams to discuss archaeological discoveries that provide insight into the history of Black communities in Nebraska.
  • Sandy Wounded Arrow, Fort Robinson Historic Site Manager to share the compelling story and legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers stationed at Fort Robinson.

The program is free. To secure your spot, please sign up at the following link: https://calendly.com/onsite-education/black-history-month

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
