On October 4th, join the Nebraska State Historical Society in commemorating the heroic actions of Omaha’s Charles Jackson French with the dedication of the “World War II Hero Charles Jackson French” Nebraska Historical Marker.
As a World War II Navy sailor, French risked his life in shark-infested waters to save his fellow sailors after a Japanese attack destroyed their warship. This marker will stand as a tribute to French’s selfless heroism and lasting impact on American history.
All are welcome to attend this event. The ceremony will be held on the grounds of the Charles Jackson French Post Office at 6223 Maple Street in Omaha, Nebraska from 2PM to 4PM. Speakers will include Mayor Jean Stothert of Omaha; Congressman Don Bacon; Eric Ewing, Executive Director of the Great Plains Black History Museum; and Autumn Langemeier, Nebraska Historical Markers Coordinator.
This marker was funded by the Nebraska State Historical Marker Equity Program. To learn more about the program: https://history.nebraska.gov/historical-marker-equity-program/.
