This Old Castle: Behind the Scenes at the State Historical Society

Join us as we go behind-the-scenes at NSHS and the Nebraska History Museum!

Let’s go behind the scenes and explore the records that tell the story of Nebraska’s historic homes and buildings.

What to expect:
Meet archivists, curators, and preservation professionals and get rare behind-the-scenes access to historic materials in storage. You’ll explore historic photographs, maps, architectural drawings, deeds, newspapers, and more—while learning how to use these resources to research and care for your own historic property.

Evening highlights include:

  • A short presentation from State Historic Preservation Office staff on preservation resources
  • Small-group tours of archival stacks
  • Hands-on time in the Reference Room with guided access to photographs, newspapers, maps, architectural firm records, and other research materials
  • Behind-the-scenes visit to the Nebraska History Museum
  • This is a very limited engagement and registration is required! This is an excursion to Lincoln, and guests are expected to provide their own transportation.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
