Community Access Program

Are you part of a nonprofit, community service provider, or religious organization? Apply for the Nebraska State Historical Society Community Access Program!

The Nebraska History Museum strives to ensure that an admission fee does not act as a barrier to access. This free program allows organizations to bring their members to the museum for free, up to 20 people, adults or kids, per visit, accompanied by a staff member from the participating organization. There is no cap on how many visits you can take per year.

To join, fill out the following application and email it to [email protected] or mail it to 1500 R St. Lincoln, NE 68508. If you have any questions, contact us by email or call 402-471-4782.

Requirements

  • Must be a Community Service Provider, Church, or Non-Profit organization.
  • Organizations must designate a single point of contact as a liaison.
  • After processing their application, organizations will receive notification regarding acceptance into the CAP. This step must be completed before visiting the museum.
  • Visits are limited to 20 people per group, and a staff member from the organization must accompany groups.
  • For groups exceeding ten people, please contact the museum in advance at 402-471-4782.
  • Note: Staff members from participating organizations cannot benefit from free admission unless they accompany clients or organization members.
  • For Churches: Churches must be providing a public good/service to the community. This includes accessibility programs, caretaker groups, or developmental (for kids and adults) groups to enter. The church’s congregation does not count as Community Access. When filling out an application as a church please be sure to identify what community aspect your church is providing.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
