Celebrate National Historic Preservation Month

Every May, communities across the country come together to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month—a time to recognize the historic sites, neighborhoods, and landmarks that connect us to our past and inspire us to protect them for future generations. Here in Nebraska, we’re marking the occasion with a series of events and activities that invite you to explore your community and discover our state’s historical heritage.

Whether you’re a longtime history enthusiast, a curious newcomer, or simply looking for a meaningful way to spend an evening, there’s something for everyone this month. From the home of a beloved statesman to the grounds of a military fort, Nebraska’s historic places have stories waiting to be told. We hope to see you out and about this May!

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Director Daryl Bohac. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
