BACKGROUND NOTE
Jacob Pursel, a native of Hunterdon County, New York, came to York County, Nebraska, from Marshall County, Illinois, in 1872. Pursel donated the corner acre of his land in the northeast quarter of Section 36, Township 9, Range 4 West, as a community burial ground. The first burial took place in 1872 and the cemetery was incorporated in 1926 and given the name “Lushton Cemetery Association”. There are 24 veterans of the Civil War, Spanish American War and World Wars I and II buried here.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This collection consists of a history of the Lushton Cemetery compiled by Lushton native Velpha Walters Deacon. Titled “1898 Donors List Toward Improvement of Lushton Cemetery,” the document includes information on the founding of the cemetery and a list of subscribers who in 1898 agreed to pay for “fencing of the Lushton Cemetery and for having someone to keep the graveyard clean.”
