Atlases/Plat BooksThe History Nebraska library collection contains over 500 county atlases or plat books dating from 1885 to the present. About 150 have been microfilmed. Check this database for an accurate account of our holdings and find atlases/plat books years of interest.

City and County Directories:  Listing of the various city and county directories held by History Nebraska.

Civil War collections:  List of various manuscript and government records collections containing materials relating to the Civil War.

Civil War Veterans:   Locate names referenced in the Civil War Veterans Indexes. Enter the Last Name, First Name, Unit Served, GAR Unit Number, GAR Unit City, and/or GAR Unit County for a list of all matching name index entries.

Gazetteer Index, 1890 and 1911:  A statewide place/name index includes communities, businesses, and farmers directories.

Nebraska Maps: A sampling of Nebraska maps held by History Nebraska. Includes territorial, state, county, and city maps.

Newspaper Indexes and Inventories:  Lists of newspapers held by History Nebraska on microfilm and links to various indexes.

Prison Records, 1870-1990:  Locate names referenced within Prison Records.

Public Instruction Reports, (Nebraska Department of), 1861-1960: Locate references within the reports.

Research Guides: History Nebraska reference leaflets and miscellaneous other resources.

Sherard’s Nebraska Place Names:  Find more than 3500 Nebraska Place Names researched by Jerry Sherard and compiled from more than 25 sources.

U.S. General Land Office Tract BooksSearch homestead applications, proofs, final certificates, and supplemental information.

World War I Draft Registration Cards (Nebraska), 1917-1918:  Over 276,000 WWI draft registration records arranged by county.

Land Entry Files (Nebraska) – National ArchivesThe National Archives’ Central Plains Region (Kansas City) has a variety of guides, reference information papers, lists, and other finding aids. Those available online for Nebraska are listed.

Marriage Records (Nebraska) – FamilySearch:  Statewide marriage index (incomplete).

Nebraska Public Documents (University of Nebraska):  Launched in October 2007, this website includes reports from 1891 to 1942 and is a keyword searchable collection of digitized historic reports of Nebraska constitutional officers and state agencies. The website now has about 169,000 pages of digital content.

About NSHS

The Nebraska State Historical Society was founded in 1878 by citizens who recognized Nebraska was going through great changes and they sought to record the stories of both indigenous and immigrant peoples. It was designated a state institution and began receiving funds from the legislature in 1883. Legislation in 1994 changed NSHS from a state institution to a state agency. The division is headed by Interim Director Cindy Drake. They are assisted by an administrative staff responsible for financial and personnel functions, museum store services, security, and facilities maintenance for NSHS.
