War Leader & Statesman of the Oglala Sioux
Red Cloud (1822 - 1909) was born in what became Garden County and rose to leadership in the early 1860s.
He opposed westward expansion and forced the U.S. government to abandon the Bozeman Trail in Wyoming in 1868. He sought to ease his peoples' painful transition to reservation life.
From 1873-77, the Red Cloud Agency was located on the White River in northwest Nebraska.
Red Cloud was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000-01.
